December is the month of poor sleep. Each of the three major appearances of the Virgin in Mexico/Oaxaca (Guadalupe, Soledad and Juquila) has its own 4-5 day festival. Each festival goes all night long, complete with brass bands, drinking, fireworks, dancing, drinking, etc. Some nights the fireworks literally go all night. Most amazing site: women dancing with fireworks structures on their heads, catherine wheels spinning, rockets flying into the air, outlines of the Virgen in bright magnesium flare colors.
