On Saturday we visited the home of our pottery teacher in Atzompa, a village just outside the city famous for its unique brown clay and green glazes. Here she is with one of three kilns she built by hand in her back yard. Turkeys, dogs, and baby chicks ran under our table as we ate her fresh tortillas together and talked--in very basic Spanish--about lessons her mother and grandmother taught her during long hours refining the local soil into clay, then building bowls, cups, casseroles and all sorts of household items.
